Nissan has finally decided that the vacant seat for next season goes to Zane Maloney. The decision surprised many, as Victor Martins had been the strongest candidate after several tests with Nissan. However, Maloney's Formula E experience was the key factor.
Nissan boss Tommaso Volpe admitted it was a tough choice. "Victor is clearly very talented, and his results in F2 are also equal to Zane's," he said. But pressure from the Nissan board to take a driver with experience in the series led them to pick Maloney, who previously raced for Lola Yamaha Abt.
Experience Matters More
Despite scoring only three points in the last two seasons, Nissan believes his pace was actually on par with teammate Lucas di Grassi. "We were a bit concerned that starting Gen4 with a pure rookie could leave us at a disadvantage," Volpe explained. "Zane already has Formula E experience and has also done Gen4 testing, so he was the best choice for us at this time."
Maloney will be in the Nissan simulator next week, before getting his first taste of the Gen4 development car next month. He has previously tested the Lola Gen4 car several times, most recently at Estoril before the London E-Prix finale.
What's Next for Martins
Martins' hopes of racing for Nissan are over, but his Formula E career is not. He has a potential seat at Lola Yamaha, which still has two vacancies for next season. Martins is also linked with a stay at Alpine, which is expected to become a Geely-branded entity next season.
With this decision, Nissan's driver line-up is complete. Maloney will partner Oliver Rowland, and all eyes will be on how he performs in the new Gen4 era.
