More bad news for Joan Mir. The Honda rider will miss the next two MotoGP rounds in Japan and Indonesia as his health condition remains unresolved. Honda announced that Mir is still undergoing a series of tests at Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona, but the results have so far been inconclusive.
Mir has been suffering from symptoms affecting his energy and performance for several months, and they have recently worsened. Dr. Angel Charte, MotoGP medical director, has advised Mir to rest completely and undergo treatment for the next 15 days. "I have advised him against participating in the Japanese and Indonesian Grands Prix," Charte said in Honda's statement.
This decision is a blow for Honda, who are fighting to improve their performance. Mir struggled at Misano, retiring from the race, and then missed the Red Bull Ring round due to inconclusive blood test results. The medical team has yet to determine the exact cause of his condition.
Honda has not yet announced a replacement for Mir at these two races. Takaaki Nakagami is a strong candidate. The Honda test rider impressed when he filled in for Mir at the Red Bull Ring. However, Nakagami is already scheduled to race as a wildcard at Motegi, his home circuit. If he takes the factory seat again, his wildcard status could change to a temporary race rider.
Mir's absence at Motegi and Mandalika will certainly affect the MotoGP competition. Honda loses one of its main riders, while rivals will look to capitalize and score as many points as possible. Mir hopes to recover soon and return to the track, but his health is the top priority.
