Ducati MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro has firmly stated that the Borgo Panigale factory needs absolute stability heading into the 2027 season. This statement came directly in response to paddock rumours linking Maverick Vinales with a potential test rider role for the upcoming year.
Vinales' future on the premier class grid remains uncertain after talks regarding a new Tech3 deal with KTM collapsed earlier this year. This situation triggered widespread paddock speculation that the ten-time grand prix winner could transition into a testing and development role with the Italian manufacturer.
Currently, the testing lineup consists of Pirro and Nicolo Bulega. However, the structure is set to shift significantly as Bulega—who secured this year's World Superbike crown—makes his graduation to race full-time with the VR46 squad in 2027.

In an interview with Italian outlet GPOne, Pirro openly questioned the effectiveness of bringing in Vinales for such a specialized developmental duty, emphasizing the vast differences between racecraft and testing workloads.
“I will definitely have to continue to be personally involved in development,” Pirro stated. He further noted, “I believe Ducati's approach has always been to provide continuity, to have certain key points in development, especially in a year of major changes like next year.”
While expressing admiration for his peer's raw talent, Pirro raised valid concerns about the psychological shift required for testing duties. “I have a lot of respect for Maverick, even though he's lost his way a bit in recent years, and as a rider you can't say anything about him. It's clear, however, that I don't know what contribution he can really make in a role like that, especially since you don't have the opportunity to race,” he explained.
The veteran Italian rider highlighted that testing demands a selfless attitude that top-tier racers rarely find appealing. “Being a test rider is completely different. If you also talk to Bulega, it's a completely different job. It's easy to say: 'Now he's without a seat, he can be a test rider.' But then you find yourself having to work for others and not for yourself. And I don't think there are many riders willing to do that, especially someone like him, who perhaps still feels strong and fast,” Pirro elaborated.
Concluding his remarks, Pirro reiterated that internal consistency should remain the core priority for the factory management. “I think we need stability above all else and not to waste energy, because being a test rider also requires a certain amount of dedication; it’s not as beautiful as it seems,” he concluded.
