An intriguing technical evaluation is underway inside the Mercedes garage ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend at the Marina Bay Circuit, where the Brackley-based squad has opted for a split-specification testing program. According to FormulaPassion, the upgrade package introduced in Malaysia is currently under intense scrutiny after failing to deliver the expected performance gains, prompting the team to seek definitive answers through direct on-track comparisons.
Fortunately for Mercedes, the immediate performance of this latest aerodynamic package is not a make-or-break factor in their championship campaign. Both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the Mercedes outfit remain firmly on course in their respective battles for the drivers' and constructors' world titles, yet the technical department insists on absolute clarity regarding the W17 development path.
Team principal Toto Wolff previously signaled ahead of the race weekend that the team would conduct comparative tests by running both the updated W17 and the pre-Malaysia specification simultaneously. This deliberate divergence allows the engineers to isolate variables and gather vital telemetry to understand where and why the new components are performing as they are.

According to reports from respected journalist Jon Noble, Andrea Kimi Antonelli will tackle the Marina Bay weekend using the updated Mercedes configuration featuring the latest upgrades. Meanwhile, teammate George Russell—who is set to start Sunday's grand prix from the back of the grid due to a power unit penalty—will pilot the W17 in its pre-Malaysia specification.
While both drivers are guaranteed to run these contrasting setups during the opening free practice session, the team has not ruled out maintaining the split configurations for the remainder of the event. By doing so, Mercedes aims to accumulate all necessary data to conclusively determine whether the new package yields a genuine performance benefit on a high-downforce street circuit.
