Mercedes F1 Drivers Skip Cooling Vests In Malaysia Due To Cost Cap
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
George Russell will not wear a cooling vest in Malaysia

Facing one of the most grueling races of the year, George Russell and his teammate will tackle extreme cockpit temperatures without the benefit of driver-cooling vests. Financial restrictions have forced the Brackley-based squad to prioritize vital car performance upgrades over developing the safety apparatus.

Cockpit temperatures at Sepang can easily exceed 50 degrees Celsius, pushing athletes to their absolute physical limits in conditions historically known to cause severe heat exhaustion. While regulations permit an in-car liquid cooling system with a mandatory 5kg ballast offset for non-users, Mercedes opted against it to channel resources into their latest W17 package.

According to Andrea Kimi Antonelli's side of the garage, the choice highlights the harsh reality of the 163 million pound spending limit, where every pound must count towards lap time. Russell admitted that while he would prefer having the cooling tech, development limitations under the strict financial regulations left the team with no viable alternative.

The situation puts them at a disadvantage compared to rivals like Ferrari and McLaren, whose drivers are reportedly utilizing the cooling systems this weekend. Russell has since called on governing bodies to find a standardized solution so safety and comfort do not become luxury items.
