A major riddle surrounds the Mercedes garage as the latest upgrade package on their W17 car has triggered a confusing performance slump instead of the expected gains. Rather than pulling clear of their Formula 1 rivals, the Brackley-based squad is facing a glaring disconnect between wind-tunnel simulations and real-world data. According to The-Race, the team is keeping all options open, including a potential back-to-back test with its old specification components in Singapore to diagnose the root cause.
Arrival in Malaysia brought high hopes for Mercedes following a substantial revamp aimed at establishing dominance. However, instead of unlocking a predicted 0.3-second lap time improvement, team boss Toto Wolff wondered if the update actually resulted in a staggering 0.5-second step backward, while Red Bull and Max Verstappen clinched their first victory of the season.
Engineers were left baffled as extra downforce shown on data computers failed to materialize into actual lap time improvements. The gains made in high-speed corners came at a severe cost to low-speed agility, while also appearing to hamper straight-line speed. The paramount objective for Mercedes is isolating how much of the deficit stemmed from the new parts versus the unique challenges posed by Sepang's abrasive asphalt and scorching track temperatures.

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli addressed the team's ongoing struggle with old asphalt surfaces. "That's the question we need to answer because we don't really know if it made us go faster or worse," Kimi Antonelli stated, pointing out similar difficulties faced earlier in places like Zandvoort where McLaren held a distinct advantage on aged tarmac.
While track surface characteristics explain slow-corner woes, straight-line deficits were largely attributed to aerodynamic drag. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord noted that increased downforce inherently brings additional drag. "That's probably one of the lesser question marks," Bradley Lord explained. With the Singapore Grand Prix looming, Mercedes faces intense engineering debriefs to quickly uncover answers under the lights of Marina Bay.
