McLaren Admits F1 Car Handling Issues Won't Be Fixed Until 2027

McLaren has been forced to accept the harsh reality that its Formula 1 car handling characteristics cannot be fully resolved in the immediate future. The technical hurdles currently hampering their campaign require fundamental changes that are simply impossible to implement until a later date.

Both Lando Norris and his teammate have found their current machinery to be an absolute handful, forcing them to apply unnatural techniques never used before in their entire professional racing careers just to extract competitive pace.

While every driver on the grid has had to adapt to the latest generation of power units and regulations, McLaren's underlying handling traits have created an extra layer of difficulty, holding the team back in its fierce battle against direct championship rivals.

The aerodynamic and mechanical complications have seemingly impacted Oscar Piastri even harder due to his distinct natural driving style, requiring immense adaptability behind the wheel compared to his more experienced teammate.

Team principal Andrea Stella candidly admitted that upcoming updates bringing extra downforce will not cure the underlying traits. The squad needs a much deeper, structural redesign of its challenger to overcome the issue completely.

Stella explained, "I don't expect that what's coming to the car will improve this characteristic. I think we need something more fundamental than simply adding some downforce to the car like it's happening in the coming races."

Furthermore, Stella confirmed that these major modifications can only arrive with a brand new chassis concept down the line. "Without fundamentally changing some further aspect which we are addressing longer term and at the earliest I would say with the MCL41 for 2027," he added.

Following the Singapore Grand Prix, Norris elaborated on the exhausting nature of driving the current McLaren package, stating he constantly has to force the car into doing what he wants rather than enjoying a balanced setup.

"It's [the car] just on a knife edge on every single corner," Norris described. "You've just got to drive it within an exact percent, and you have to force the car in every single way. You can't let the car do any work."

The intense concentration required lap after lap drains the drivers mentally, making it incredibly difficult to stitch together clean qualifying laps without tipping the car over its extremely narrow operating window.
