Max Verstappen claimed his maiden victory of the 2026 season after surviving a thrilling wet-dry thriller at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. Extreme weather shifts kept tension at an absolute peak even before the lights went out for the 56-lap encounter.
A heavy downpour struck the circuit 30 minutes before the scheduled start, forcing the FIA to delay the race start. Chaos ensued during the formation lap as Lewis Hamilton encountered a software issue in his Ferrari, while a bold tyre gamble by the Maranello squad quickly backfired.
When the race finally got underway, pole-sitter Verstappen opted for intermediate tyres but suffered a sluggish getaway. Andrea Kimi Antonelli seized the opportunity to snatch the lead ahead of George Russell, while runners on slick tyres instantly plummeted down the order.

The intense battle on the treacherous damp track tested the ultimate limits of the field. Verstappen gradually found his rhythm to claw his way back to the front, while Hamilton staged an inspired recovery drive from the back of the pack.
As the chequered flag waved, Verstappen successfully held off late pressure from Mercedes to seal a memorable victory, setting the tone for an unpredictable championship battle ahead.
