Max Verstappen is set to become the centre of attention during this weekend’s Nürburgring 24 Hours, although his participation has also triggered growing concerns regarding safety and event capacity.
The Red Bull Formula 1 driver will make his 24-hour racing debut in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 and is already targeting victory around the legendary Nordschleife circuit.

Verstappen’s popularity has reportedly generated enormous global interest in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, with the event officially selling out for the first time in its history.

The number of cars entered for this year’s edition has also increased, something that is beginning to worry several endurance racing competitors.
Sky Sports F1 pundit and GT racing driver Naomi Schiff revealed that multiple drivers competing this weekend are concerned about the possibility of increased accidents during the event.
The forecast of difficult weather conditions throughout the weekend has only intensified concerns at the notoriously narrow and highly demanding Nordschleife circuit.
“I’ve spoken to a few of my friends who are racing and they’re all very happy Max is there because he’s bringing huge attention to GT racing,” Schiff explained on the Up to Speed podcast.
However, Schiff believes the record number of spectators could also create major logistical pressure on the Nürburgring facilities.
“There are concerns about how many people will attend and whether the facilities can actually handle that amount of fans,” Schiff said.
In addition, the increased number of cars combined with the expected poor weather has left drivers worried about a significant rise in collisions and on-track incidents.
“There are more cars on track this year and the weather is expected to be very difficult, so they are worried about plenty of crashes,” she added.
Despite the concerns, Verstappen’s participation continues to be viewed positively overall due to the enormous spotlight it has brought to Nürburgring and GT racing worldwide.
