Max Verstappen suffered a shock crash in the closing laps of the 2026 British Grand Prix, triggering a late safety car and ending what had looked like a strong podium chance.
The Red Bull driver appeared to be on course for a comfortable third-place finish before encountering a bizarre moment at Stowe. The incident immediately changed the shape of the race in the closing stages.
"F*****g unbelievable," Verstappen said over team radio.

Verstappen's frustration was clear because the podium had appeared to be within his control before the incident. At that stage, the loss was not only about the race result, but also about the points impact in the championship context.
Verstappen was not the only podium contender to suffer major late disappointment. Kimi Antonelli also experienced an unusual Mercedes wheel shield failure, which damaged the car's balance and compromised his chance of securing a strong result.
The safety car froze the front order under neutralisation, with Charles Leclerc leading ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. That left Ferrari and Mercedes in important strategic positions heading into the restart or final phase of the race.
Verstappen's crash became one of the defining late turning points of the British GP because it removed a podium opportunity that had looked secure. The next focus will be the cause of the Stowe moment and how Red Bull explains the loss of a major result at Silverstone.
