A remarkable turnaround has been completed by Max Verstappen at the Sepang circuit after securing his first pole position of the 2026 season. Less than a month ago at Monza, the four-time world champion was left frustrated, famously describing his car as being made of paper due to persistent component degradation issues.
However, the narrative has shifted dramatically following significant setup improvements and crucial upgrades introduced since Baku. Working alongside team principal Laurent Mekies, the Milton Keynes squad has successfully guided the RB22 into a much sweeter operating window amidst the punishing Malaysian heat.
Pure pace was evident from Friday onwards when Verstappen delivered impressive long-run simulations. That strong foundation culminated in a dominant qualifying performance on Saturday afternoon, putting the Dutchman firmly at the front of the grid.

Despite the breakthrough, Verstappen remained level-headed regarding the struggles faced by key rivals like Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. He suggested that their difficulties in the hot conditions contributed to the pecking order shift, viewing it as an off-weekend for the Brackley outfit rather than a permanent deficit.
Regardless of external factors, the technical strides engineered under Pierre Wache have undeniably unlocked newfound confidence within the Red Bull garage, setting the stage for an intense battle when the lights go out.
