Nearly half of the 2026 grid will step aside to watch from the pit wall during the opening practice session of the Mexican Grand Prix on October 30, as ten rookie Friday drivers take over official duties. Only Scuderia Ferrari chooses to keep their regular lineup completely untouched with their standard race drivers.
Over at Red Bull Racing, Max Verstappen has to sit out the first session with Japanese talent Ayumu Iwasa taking over his car. Despite losing valuable track time, the Dutchman remains completely relaxed because the learning loss is kept to a minimum, especially since the traditional Mexican venue is usually extremely dirty during the initial Friday running.
The massive shake-up extends across the pit lane as George Russell steps aside at Mercedes for Frederik Vesti, while world champion Lando Norris hands his McLaren over to Leonardo Fornaroli. Other notable rookie appearances include Gabriele Mini, Nikola Tsolov, Ryo Hirakawa, Jak Crawford, Luke Browning, Freddie Slater, and Colton Herta filling in for their respective team regulars.

Analyzing the upcoming challenge at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Verstappen pointed out the notoriously low grip levels found at the venue. He explained that drivers usually compensate for the lack of traction by running steeper wings, though engineers always face strict aerodynamic limitations when configuring the car for such high-altitude conditions.
The reigning champion also addressed several operational hurdles that his squad needs to clean up, ranging from intermittent radio failures earlier this year to start consistency and strategic miscalculations during the Austin weekend. Addressing these combined factors remains essential as the team looks to secure victory once again.
