The MotoGP rider market has taken an unexpected turn following fresh updates regarding Maverick Vinales. The 10-time premier class race winner has been heavily linked with a potential test rider role with Ducati for the 2027 season. This development comes after he lost his grid spot with KTM following a major fallout between the two parties over his contract terms.

The grid for the upcoming season is practically locked out, with all seats assigned except for Honda's final decision between David Alonso and Diogo Moreira to partner Fabio Quartararo in the factory squad. With top seats in World Superbike also heavily accounted for, Vinales finds himself with very limited options on the table.

Rumours regarding a switch to Ducati intensified after reports surfaced of a meeting between Vinales and management during the Japanese Grand Prix. Ducati currently relies on Michele Pirro and Nicolo Bulega for testing duties, though Bulega is set to race with the VR46 squad in 2027 following his WorldSBK title triumph. Meanwhile, Pirro has reached 40 years of age, increasing the necessity for a race-fit tester to aid future development.

Vinales brings vast multi-manufacturer experience across Suzuki, Yamaha, Aprilia, and KTM machinery, making him an attractive asset for Ducati's technical department. Although regulation changes mean a test role in 2027 would exclude wildcard appearances, the Spaniard would remain a prime candidate for injury cover.

Addressing his future, Vinales admitted that testing alone might not satisfy his competitive hunger as racing remains his absolute priority. "I think every night about what to do," Vinales told reporters, including Crash on Thursday in Indonesia. "At the moment, I’m thinking a lot about how I can approach the future. I’m not sure of anything, because I still feel like I can give a lot. My main priority is to race in MotoGP, not to test. I need to still think a lot."
