Jorge Martin might not be the fastest rider at the Aragon Circuit this weekend, but the MotoGP championship leader still sees a silver lining in a Sprint that ended in fifth place. Amid the struggles he faced with his Aprilia machinery, Martin insisted that the result is nothing to be ashamed of.
Martin's performance in Aragon is far from his best form. After being quickest at Silverstone, the Spaniard has looked off the pace since practice. In qualifying, he was the slowest among the main RS-GP26 riders, and his race pace in the Sprint was not convincing either. Even with Raul Fernandez dropping back, Martin could not challenge the top three or Pedro Acosta.
“I think it was a good result. With how the weekend is going, being in the top five is not bad at all,” he told Sky Sport MotoGP. “I think this track is not great for me, and without ever riding the Aprilia here, I'm struggling a bit more. But we have to work, and we are doing that. Hopefully tomorrow we can make another step forward.”
The main issue for Martin is the front end of the bike. “I'm struggling a bit with the front, after a few laps I feel like I start losing the front, I have no grip and I can't push. We need to understand how to improve in that phase to have more cornering speed. In the first laps I was really close, but then when the front drops I have to survive and bring the bike home.”
Despite the difficulties, Martin remains optimistic about his progress. “Since Saturday morning until today, I have always been closing the gap to the riders ahead. Tomorrow with the medium tire, I think that gap can be even smaller,” he added.
With Marc Marquez taking his fifth consecutive win at Aragon, Martin lost seven points to his rival. However, he still leads the championship by 29 points over Marco Bezzecchi and 33 over Marquez. The pressure remains, but Martin seems to be enjoying every small step he makes.
