Defending MotoGP champion Marc Marquez made an immediate statement at his favorite circuit, topping the first free practice session at Aragon. The Ducati rider was fastest throughout, confirming his dominance at MotorLand Aragon.
Marquez led most of the session, closely followed by his brother, Alex Marquez. Both are known to be exceptionally strong at this track. However, a late surprise came from Raul Fernandez, who bolted on new tyres and nearly snatched the top spot. The Trackhouse rider ultimately fell just 0.035 seconds short of Marquez's time.
Behind them, Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and Alex Marquez trailed by 0.221 and 0.264 seconds respectively. Notably, both riders stayed on the same tyres throughout, showing impressive consistency that could bode well for the race.
There was a surprising gap between fourth-placed Alex Marquez and fifth-placed Pedro Acosta, who was over four tenths down. Acosta, the fastest KTM rider, had his customary FP1 crash at Turn 12 late on, a recurring pattern for him.
Good news came from injury returnees Fermin Aldeguer, ninth, and Johann Zarco, 11th and the leading Honda. Zarco made his first MotoGP appearance in months after a long knee injury layoff.
Stand-in riders also made an impression. Pol Espargaro, replacing Maverick Vinales at Tech3 KTM, took a credible 15th. Meanwhile, Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori, substituting for the injured Ai Ogura, was last, 2.8 seconds off, in his first outing on the 1000cc bike in a long time.
Besides Acosta, only Fabio Di Giannantonio crashed, an early fall at Turn 3. With Marquez looking so strong, can he carry this momentum through the weekend? We'll see.
