Marc Marquez lived up to his favourite status at Aragon by topping the opening MotoGP practice session on Friday morning. The defending champion, unbeaten at the circuit in his four races as a Ducati rider, looked strong despite hinting he would save energy after struggling with right-arm strength at Silverstone.
Marquez set the fastest lap of 1m 47.532s, edging out Silverstone winner Raul Fernandez by just 0.035s. Fernandez, riding for Trackhouse Aprilia, set his time on used tyres, while Marquez used a fresh set.
Marco Bezzecchi took third for Aprilia Racing, 0.221s behind, with Alex Marquez fourth on the Gresini Ducati. Bezzecchi also tested new rear aero on his RS-GP26.
Pedro Acosta was fifth for KTM despite a crash at Turn 12 late in the session. Jack Miller, confirmed to leave Pramac Yamaha and MotoGP at season's end, impressed in sixth with a new rear tyre.
VR46 riders Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio followed in seventh and eighth, with Di Giannantonio recovering from an early crash at Turn 3. Fermin Aldeguer made his MotoGP comeback in ninth, ahead of Fabio Quartararo.
Johann Zarco, returning from injury, took an impressive eleventh after fitting a new soft front tyre. Lorenzo Savadori, substituting for the injured Ai Ogura at Trackhouse, completed the 22-rider field.
Marquez's performance puts him in a strong position to close the 31-point gap to championship leader Jorge Martin, who could only manage 18th in FP1.
