Davide Tardozzi, Ducati's MotoGP team boss, has admitted that Marc Marquez's struggles with his right arm at the British Grand Prix were 'a shock for us too'. The admission comes after Marquez could only manage seventh in the main race at Silverstone, a far cry from his three consecutive wins prior to the summer break.
The seven-time world champion is still recovering from a complicated right shoulder injury sustained last October in Indonesia following a collision with Marco Bezzecchi. His latest issue involved metalwork in his arm touching the radial nerve, affecting his riding. After surgery post-French GP, Marquez won in Hungary, Czechia, and Germany, cutting his championship deficit from 102 points to just 18.
However, the expected progress during the summer break didn't materialize. Marquez admitted at Silverstone that his condition 'is what it is' and that he must adapt. In a behind-the-scenes video, he told his team he had 'no control' over his right arm. He later explained that he used up all his energy by Sunday, having thought he could attack the weekend normally.
Tardozzi, speaking at Aragon, said: "Yeah, honestly it was a shock for us too because we were confident that the summer break helped him. But as I said already, some months ago, that in September we will see the real potential of Marc. And I hope that after this race, Misano and Austria, we will have a real expectation."
At Aragon, Marquez has shown signs of improvement. The anti-clockwise layout is kinder to his physical condition. He was fastest in FP1 and beat the lap record in Practice, though he ended up third overall after not using a fresh soft rear tyre like Bezzecchi and Alex Marquez ahead of him.
Marquez, a seven-time winner at Aragon, said he knew this track suited him from his first test on a 125cc bike. "I knew it was a good track for me," he commented. Will he be able to return to the top step this weekend? We'll see.
