Pedro Acosta's maiden MotoGP victory in Austria has immediately reshaped the 2026 title fight. Marc Marquez, who previously saw the championship battle as a three-way tussle between himself, Jorge Martin, and Marco Bezzecchi, now insists the KTM rider has officially joined the hunt.
Acosta delivered a dominant performance at the Red Bull Ring, starting from third on the grid and becoming the first rider to beat Aprilia and Ducati in a Sunday race this year. That result lifted him to fourth in the standings, though he remains 72 points behind leader Martin with seven races remaining.
“The top four guys are ready to fight for the championship,” Marquez said. “Since KTM opened the engines after Silverstone and again have good power, they are here ready to fight for the championship.”
Marquez also highlighted Acosta's speed at Motegi, a track where he has always been fast. “After this GP, Pedro is again the favourite for Motegi,” he added. “Every year, he has been very, very fast there. Already he was very fast his first year. He crashed leading the sprint race, and then in the main race, he crashed fighting for second and for the victory. Last year also, he was very fast. It will be tight between the top four guys in the last seven races.”
Championship leader Jorge Martin of Aprilia also acknowledged Acosta's threat. “I think leadership comes and goes; I don't really think about it,” Martin said. “It's a big fight. If Pedro continues winning like this weekend with this dominance, I think even he is in the fight, so it will be an interesting Asian tour for sure.”
Martin added that he will try to match the speed he had in Austria. “We will try to match the speed I had here because if I have the speed, I will fight. But for sure there are races where I struggle and we are a bit in the back. This is part of the game, but I feel strong and I feel we can have a good level the rest of the season.”
With KTM's improved performance after engine updates, the 2026 MotoGP title battle is expected to intensify. The remaining seven races, including the Asian tour, will be the true test for Acosta and his rivals. If Acosta can maintain consistency, he could challenge Martin and Marquez until the season finale.
