Marc Marquez picked up where he left off at Aragon, topping the first practice session of the MotoGP weekend with a 1m47.532s. The Ducati Lenovo rider edged out Trackhouse Aprilia's Raul Fernandez, reaffirming his status as the man to beat at the MotorLand circuit, where he has been unbeaten since joining Ducati in 2024.
The 45-minute session was lively from the start. Alex Marquez initially set the pace on his Gresini Ducati with a 1m48.011s, but his older brother Marc quickly responded with a 1m47.763s. With just over 15 minutes remaining, Marc dug deep on worn medium tyres to produce the benchmark lap that would go unchallenged to the chequered flag.
Raul Fernandez was the surprise of the session, jumping to second thanks to a late time attack on fresh medium rubber. Marco Bezzecchi, on the factory Aprilia, completed the top three with a consistent run, while Alex Marquez slipped to fourth. Pedro Acosta was the leading KTM rider in fifth, despite a late crash at Turn 12 that left him unharmed.
Two crashes punctuated the session: Fabio Di Giannantonio went down at Turn 3 early on, and Acosta's spill at Turn 12. Both riders were able to walk away, but the incidents will be a talking point heading into FP2.
Johann Zarco made his much-anticipated return since his horror crash at Barcelona, finishing 11th and leading the Honda charge. Meanwhile, championship contenders Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia had a low-key morning, ending 18th and 20th respectively. They will need a strong FP2 to avoid the Q1 scrap.
