Lewis Hamilton Hit With Painful British GP Penalty

Lewis Hamilton has been handed a five-second time penalty by British Grand Prix stewards after being judged to have moved before the red lights went out at the start at Silverstone.

The Ferrari driver made a rapid getaway from third on the grid and passed pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli. Hamilton then moved into second place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, who also made a strong start.

However, the stewards conducted a rapid investigation and issued Hamilton a five-second penalty. The punishment must be served at his next pit stop, making his victory bid more complicated from the early phase of the race.

On Lap 10 of 52, Hamilton was running 3.1 seconds behind Leclerc. Antonelli was 0.7 seconds behind Hamilton, meaning the penalty could put the Ferrari driver at risk of losing position once the pit-stop phase begins.

The situation is significant for Ferrari because the team had two cars at the front in the opening phase. Leclerc led the race, but Hamilton's penalty reduces Ferrari's strategic flexibility in its attempt to control track position and keep Antonelli under pressure.

Elsewhere, Alex Albon was also given a 10-second penalty after being judged to have caused a collision with Oliver Bearman on the opening lap. That added another stewarding intervention to the early stages of the British GP.

Hamilton now needs to build enough margin before his pit stop if he is to remain in victory contention. With a five-second penalty hanging over him, Ferrari's focus will shift to first-stint pace, pit timing and Hamilton's ability to defend from Antonelli's pressure.
