Lando Norris laboured to fifth spot

Lando Norris endured a frustrating qualifying session at the Marina Bay street circuit, having to settle for a fifth-place grid slot after wrestling with an unpredictable McLaren package throughout the evening. The British driver admitted that extracting single-lap pace from his MCL38 required driving on a razor-thin margin of error.

The fiercely contested qualifying hour concluded with Max Verstappen claiming a brilliant pole position ahead of a competitive field. Meanwhile, Norris struggled to find consistent balance and raw speed during Q3, leaving him stranded on the third row of the grid behind key rivals and just ahead of his own garage teammate.

The core issue highlighted by the Woking-based team's leading charger was the extreme difficulty in handling the car across bumpy asphalt surfaces. Norris explained that forcing performance out of a tricky chassis meant any minor miscalculation could instantly ruin a flying lap.

"Nothing’s changed. We’re not quick enough. I mean, there were moments where I would do a good Sector 1 or a good Sector 2, but the car is just so difficult to drive," Norris conceded when detailing his on-track struggles during the high-stakes session.

He further emphasized that the narrow operational window left zero room for adjustment, forcing him into a high-risk driving style where pushing even slightly beyond the threshold could spell disaster on a unforgiving layout.

"So it’s balancing it too much and on a track like this with the bumps and everything it was just too difficult. So, no reasons, no excuses, just not quite good enough," he concluded, signaling an urgent need for technical improvements.
