Lando Norris did put make many friends after his touch with Oscar Piastri

Reigning World Champion Lando Norris has confirmed that he must put McLaren before himself in future races, following his dramatic on-track coming together with teammate Oscar Piastri at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The intense collision occurred during the Sprint race at the Marina Bay Circuit when Norris attempted an ambitious overtaking move on the Australian driver at Turn 5 on the final lap. The impact sent both papaya cars spinning out of fourth and fifth places respectively, forcing Piastri into a premature retirement while Norris recovered to salvage eighth place.

Although the incident cost vital points in the fiercely contested Constructors' Championship and left the Woking-based squad's hierarchy furious, Team Principal Andrea Stella initiated crucial internal talks to establish a unified and clear path forward for the remaining rounds of the 2026 season.

Speaking after Sunday's Grand Prix where he secured a fourth-place finish just ahead of Piastri, Norris addressed the team's strict directives moving forward. "No, it is pretty straightforward," he responded when asked about expectations for ongoing team management discussions.

"I cannot attempt what I did, I should never have done it in the first place, even if the move was on. I've got to think more about the team that I represent than myself. It was a mistake on my part, and I let the team down. I have also apologised to them and I owe them all an apology. We will do better next time."

Demonstrating immediate accountability, Norris even offered to assist Piastri during Sunday's main race to compensate for the previous day's error, a gesture welcomed by his team principal. While McLaren ultimately did not need to utilize the tactical help as Piastri comfortably crossed the line in fifth right behind Norris, the collaborative mindset proved invaluable.

Heading into the upcoming race weekend in Austin with Red Bull sitting only seven points behind in the Constructors' standings, flawless teamwork and unity are paramount for McLaren to defend their position against mounting pressure at the front of the grid.
