KTM finally returned to the top step of the MotoGP podium after a long wait. Pedro Acosta's victory at the Red Bull Ring was a cathartic moment for a team that nearly vanished from the grid. But behind the euphoria lies a stark warning: don't get complacent like before.
Since Miguel Oliveira's last win in Thailand 2022, KTM endured a turbulent period. The financial crisis in late 2024 almost forced them to fold. The company went into administration before being rescued by an existing shareholder. Now, with Acosta's win, KTM seems reborn.
In parc ferme, CEO Gottfried Neumeister and motorsport director Pit Beirer embraced tightly. Emotions pent up over a year and a half burst into tears of joy. "It was pure catharsis," a paddock source said. "A moment that released enormous tension."
However, history shows KTM once fell into the trap of arrogance. A former KTM employee now working for another manufacturer revealed, "If you analyse it, KTM's pride and stubbornness always held them back. Those in charge had no patience. Without method and clear direction, it's very difficult to survive in MotoGP."
For instance, in 2019 Pierer insisted they would never abandon the trellis frame. Three years later, engineers decided the only way to make the RC16 competitive was to switch to carbon fibre. That stubbornness bordered on arrogance, especially in setting targets. Pierer once aimed for the title within five years, but upheaval ensued instead.
Acosta's win is a new beginning, but also a test. KTM must learn from past mistakes: stay humble, patient, and build a solid foundation. Otherwise, they could lose valuable assets like what happened with Acosta.
