Inside F1's New Rwanda Track: Extreme Topography and Rollercoaster Elevation Changes

Formula 1 is preparing for its long-awaited return to the African continent after more than thirty years away, a milestone that F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali hailed as one of the most significant moments in its history. An exclusive media visit to Kigali and the Rise Motordrome project site in nearby Bugesera provided a firsthand look at the ambitions behind the grand prix, shedding light on the motivations and vision driving the circuit project.

Based on direct on-site observations, the layout is meticulously engineered to work in harmony with the local landscape rather than demanding massive earthworks to level the terrain. Former F1 driver and track designer Alex Wurz emphasized that the natural topography featuring two hills alongside a lake offers an ideal setting for drivers to navigate the stunning landscape.

Circuit architect Carlsten Tilke noted that the layout boasts extraordinary elevation changes. One of the straights will feature a gradient more extreme than the legendary Eau Rouge at Spa, with total elevation gains reaching 197 meters per lap and slopes touching nearly 15 percent in certain sections.

Backed by a breathtaking natural backdrop, the new venue is expected to inject much-needed aesthetic variety and a thrilling driving challenge into the world championship calendar.

While the fundamental layout is locked in, minor tweaks remain possible as developers continue to refine the circuit. Designers reiterate that the ultimate goal is to deliver an intensely enjoyable driving experience while ensuring competitive racing conditions for the entire grid.
