Grove Racing has finally revealed the root cause of the engine failure that struck Matt Payne during last Sunday's final race at Queensland Raceway, costing him a shot at the minor premiership in the Supercars championship.

Initial checks pointed to an electrical issue, but a deeper investigation at Triple Eight's engine shop uncovered a significant mechanical failure in the valve train. This was disclosed by Grove Racing's head of performance, Al McVean, who was invited to witness the engine teardown on Monday night.

“We were invited to Triple Eight to see the engine strip and found a major mechanical failure in the valve train,” McVean said. “Once that happened, there was no chance of continuing. We couldn't have prevented it or gotten back on track.”

McVean admitted the moment was heartbreaking for the team, but emphasized that they have regrouped and are now fully focused on the upcoming enduros, including Bathurst, and the finals where both drivers remain well-placed.

In today's pre-enduro test at Queensland Raceway, Payne, using a replacement engine alongside co-driver Will Davison, finished fourth fastest. Meanwhile, valve train issues have been a hot topic in the Supercars paddock, though not linked to Ford engines.

Instead, Toyota Supras have suffered from top-end reliability problems, leading to the introduction of a B-spec engine. Chaz Mostert's failure on Sunday raised concerns, but analysis pointed to a bottom end bearing issue. All B-spec engines were replaced with A-spec units for today's test for further checks ahead of the enduros.
