A true weekend of truth awaits George Russell in Singapore. The British driver is officially set to start Sunday's Grand Prix from the very back of the starting grid. This strategic decision has been implemented by the Mercedes team in order to thoroughly analyze which components are functioning properly within their latest aerodynamic upgrade package.
Rather than running the latest specification, George Russell will contest the Singapore weekend utilizing the W17 car in its pre-Sepang upgrade spec. The team is eager to understand the underlying data after enduring a disastrous performance in Malaysia, which marked their lowest competitive point of the season so far.
“I believe Singapore is the second worst place to have to drop back on the starting grid after Monaco, but we couldn't do otherwise,” explained George Russell, speaking to the media as reported by FormulaPassion. The driver remains optimistic despite the massive sporting penalty awaiting him on race day.

“I'm happy to tackle the weekend with the car I won with in Baku and with which Antonelli won in Madrid, it's definitely a fast car. In Malaysia we had our worst weekend in terms of performance. The package lacked the front wing that Antonelli will have here, so perhaps one of the reasons why the new parts didn't work is linked to the wing,” he elaborated regarding the technical setup.
The Mercedes racer also maintained absolute honesty when assessing his own position and deficit in the championship standings this year, refusing to make excuses for his current championship standing.
“Without considering luck or bad luck, this year simply I haven't been up to par with the situation,” stated George Russell openly. “I can only concentrate on the things I can control and not on the reliability issues,” he concluded ahead of the crucial track sessions.
