Mercedes is weighing up when George Russell will serve an engine change penalty over the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The decision comes after the team confirmed that Kimi Antonelli will start from the back of the grid at the Italian Grand Prix following an engine failure in Barcelona.
Russell, who currently leads the drivers' championship, is expected to face a penalty due to exceeding his allocated engine components. However, Mercedes has yet to determine which race will be the execution point, aiming to minimize the impact on their title bid.
According to Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' trackside engineering director, track selection is crucial. Monza, a favourite due to its overtaking-friendly characteristics, is a strong candidate. However, the team also considers engine reliability and the urgency of replacing the power unit.
Shovlin explained that the final decision will depend on technical conditions and team strategy. "We've lost some internal combustion engines at reasonably low mileage. So the biggest thing is a case of we need to take it by this point. If that point is a race where you really don't want to be fighting from the back, we'll consider bringing it earlier," he said.
With Mercedes leading both championships, the team feels it is the right time to face the 'painful' consequences. "There's a bit of a sense that we've got a lead in both championships. Let's do the painful stuff while we have a lead," Shovlin added.
Mercedes hopes to avoid having both drivers serve penalties at the same race. Therefore, attention now turns to circuits after Monza where overtaking is considered easier. A final decision is expected soon.
