George Russell admitted a difficult run of races tested him mentally before he returned to winning ways at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. The victory marked his second of the season and his first since the opening round in Australia.

The Mercedes driver had fallen 68 points behind teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli after the Monaco Grand Prix. However, strong performances over the last two race weekends have reduced the championship deficit to 40 points after outscoring the Italian at consecutive events.

"The tough races definitely test you psychologically. These last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it," Russell said.

Russell described his Austrian Grand Prix performance as one of his most complete weekends of the year, highlighting both his qualifying speed and race pace despite believing the Red Bull Ring does not naturally suit his driving style.

"Single-lap pace and race pace have been very strong this weekend on a track that is probably not very well suited to my style. I'm looking forward to heading to Silverstone next week and seeing all the home fans," he added.

Although he controlled much of the race, Russell acknowledged that Max Verstappen remained a constant threat throughout the afternoon. He praised Red Bull's upgraded package after the Dutchman stayed within striking distance until the closing laps.

"Max and Red Bull were incredibly quick this weekend, so kudos to them," Russell said.

The Austrian Grand Prix victory not only strengthened Russell's championship challenge but also provided Mercedes with valuable momentum heading into Silverstone, where the Brackley-based squad will aim to continue its recent resurgence in front of its home crowd.
