The Formula 1 world championship has officially confirmed that it has concluded a landmark 10-year agreement with the government of Rwanda to host the African Grand Prix by the year 2030 at the earliest. This major announcement marks the highly anticipated return of the premier motorsport series to the African continent for the first time since the South African Grand Prix held back in 1993.
According to the official announcement revealed during a press conference in the capital city of Kigali, the event will take place at a yet-to-be-built natural road course located 40 kilometers south of the city. The new venue will be situated right next to the Rwandan capital's under-construction Bugesera international airport. The inaugural edition, officially designated as the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, could kick off as early as 2030 depending on the construction timeline of the track.
The long-term agreement was jointly announced during a high-profile media gathering attended by Rwandan president Paul Kagame, F1 CEO and president Stefano Domenicali, and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The presence of these key figures underlines the strict commitment and shared vision to expand the world championship calendar into new territories that have been absent from the sport for over three decades.

The Bugesera circuit layout has been meticulously designed by former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz and his specialized design firm. The track is expected to fully capitalize on Kigali's undulating hilly terrain to craft a technically demanding circuit, forming a crucial component of a broader investment strategy by the Rwandan Development Board aimed at boosting tourism, modern infrastructure, and commercial expansion.
President Paul Kagame emphasized during the press conference that today truly belongs to Africa. For more than thirty years, the pinnacle of motorsport has raced without the continent, and that reality changes through this partnership, giving millions of young fans the opportunity to experience the championship in their home region and envision futures within the sport as engineers, technicians, and drivers.
