The Aussie Racing Cars race this weekend ended in bewildering chaos. With just over two minutes remaining, Brendon Tucker beached his car in the gravel trap at Turn 3, triggering a confusing signal mix-up that left commentators and drivers baffled.
Caleb Patterson and Diesel Thomas were side-by-side as the timing flashed red, quickly changing to yellow. However, exiting the corner, the electronic signal flashed green. The scenes left commentators Matt Naulty and Craig Lowndes confused.
“Will that be enough for a Safety Car? And if it is, it’s going to be game set and match,” Naulty remarked. “And it is called. Just as they got to that sector. It was only 0.53s of a second. So the Shannons Safety Car will wait for the field.”
But the top three continued to race. “I’m not sure if these two know what’s going on right now. They’re busy, engaged in battle down here,” Naulty continued. Lowndes was equally bewildered: “We’ve seen it on our screens, but the Safety Car is still sitting in the pit lane at the moment.”
Approaching Turn 6, Madden locked up and slid into Thomas, climbing up on the front right wheel and dislodging the front bodywork from both cars. Naulty and Lowndes questioned the move as yellow flags waved at Turn 6. “You can see the yellow flag at the top of the screen there,” said Lowndes. “The yellow flag was being waved at the flag point. They’re still racing very heavily.”
Naulty added: “They were racing way too hard. This should never have happened to begin with, so there will be questions raised after this.” Madden slipped back to fifth, while Thomas emerged in 10th and the race ended under the control of the Safety Car. Madden was given a 30-second post-race penalty for the collision, dropping him to 24th.
Speedcafe sought clarification from Motorsport Australia over the mixed signals but would not offer an update. Despite seeing a red flag and yellow flag at Turn 3, drivers Speedcafe spoke to said they continued to race having seen the green flag waved exiting the turn.
In the final classification, Scott Andriske inherited the win ahead of Anthony Di Mauro while Mathew Basso was third. Patterson, who took the chequered flag first, was disqualified post-race for a weight-related issue. Aussie Racing Cars returns on Sunday for the first of two final races at 8:30am AEST.
