FIA to Hear McLaren and Red Bull's Monaco GP Appeal Next Week

The tension in the Formula 1 paddock is far from over. Next week, the FIA will hear the appeals lodged by McLaren and Red Bull over the controversial decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly's podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The saga began on June 7, when Gasly crossed the line third but two five-second penalties for speeding in the pitlane dropped him to seventh. That promoted Isack Hadjar of Red Bull to the podium.

Alpine immediately lodged a right of review after gathering evidence that Gasly had not exceeded the 60km/h limit. It turned out that FOM, F1's timekeeper, admitted an error in the pitlane distance measurement, which caused average speeds to be over-reported.

The stewards accepted the evidence and rescinded Gasly's penalties, restoring his third place. It marked his sixth career podium but sparked fury among teams, as Gasly was not the only driver penalised for the same infringement.

Other drivers like Oscar Piastri and George Russell had already served their penalties during the race. Piastri even made an extra pitstop and finished fifth behind Gasly and Hadjar. "I'm pretty mind-blown by the decision," he said after the Barcelona race.

Russell lost a potential podium after a drive-through penalty for not serving his penalty correctly, leaving him 68 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli in the standings. "I've obviously lost the position, but I can only imagine how George is feeling," Piastri added.

With this appeal, the FIA must be cautious not to set a dangerous precedent. The final decision could change the race results once again.
