The paddock tension shows no sign of easing. The FIA appeal hearing held on Tuesday to review the Monaco Grand Prix result could take longer than expected. McLaren and Red Bull have presented their arguments before the FIA International Court of Appeal, but a final decision is not expected for another two to three weeks.
This case stems from the controversial decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly to third place in Monaco. He had initially been handed two five-second penalties for exceeding the pit lane speed limit, but after new evidence emerged regarding inaccurate timing loop distances, those penalties were rescinded, and Gasly was promoted to the podium.
That decision triggered a chain reaction. Oscar Piastri, who had dropped to fifth, and Isack Hadjar, who lost his third-place finish, were the most affected. Unsurprisingly, McLaren and Red Bull filed appeals just four days after the decision was announced.
The key issue is the disparity in treatment between Gasly and other drivers who received similar penalties. Piastri, for instance, had already served his penalty during his pit stop, as did George Russell with a drive-through. Since those penalties were already executed, they could no longer appeal. This perceived injustice is what McLaren is fighting for.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella stressed that his aim is not just for his own team's benefit. "We go to the hearing with a double intent. The first is more general than McLaren's interest. We think the process that happened after the race in Monaco needs to be reviewed for fairness for all competitors," he said.
With the verdict delayed, uncertainty continues to loom. Gasly and Alpine are still waiting to know their podium fate, while Hadjar hopes to reclaim third place. One thing is certain: this case has sparked a major debate about how the FIA handles penalties that have already been served and their impact on race results.
