Ferrari is still grappling with a straight-line speed deficit in the 2026 season. Despite introducing an engine upgrade at the Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc continue to lament the lack of top speed compared to rivals like Mercedes. Team principal Fred Vasseur has spoken out about the scale of the challenge.
Engine Process Far More Complicated
Vasseur explained that engine development cannot be done overnight. "The process of the engine is mega long," he told the media. "The chassis, you can make an upgrade from one day to the other very quickly and come back into the pace. But on the engine, the process is mega long because the lead time of the parts is long and the cost cap is not easy – you have to produce the engine for the season. And if you want to start to do the development, you have to produce a new batch of engines."
This statement underscores that Ferrari cannot simply rely on aerodynamic development to close the gap. Significant investment and time are required to match rivals.
ADUO Not Enough
This year, the FIA introduced ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) to help struggling teams. However, Vasseur insists that the assistance will not be enough to reach parity with the benchmark. "We are not expecting to recover with ADUO 1 or ADUO 2," he said. "We are doing small steps. If you make a small step on the engine, keep in mind that behind us, it was hundredths of a second. In terms of position, even if you make a couple of horsepower, it's a good step on the grid. Now we will have a new engine next year. For sure, the target is to catch up as soon as possible."
With tight technical regulations and budget constraints, Ferrari must be smart in allocating resources. Focusing on the 2027 engine might be a priority, but they still need to maintain performance for the rest of 2026.
Impact on Standings
This straight-line speed deficit makes it difficult for Ferrari to compete at tracks that prioritize top speed like Monza and Spa. This is reflected in their championship position, trailing Mercedes and Red Bull. If not addressed soon, their title chances could dwindle.
However, Vasseur remains optimistic. With a new engine coming next year, he hopes Ferrari can return to winning ways. "We will keep working hard," he asserted.
