F1 Singapore GP 2026 Analysis: How Ferrari Handed Pole to Verstappen

The failure of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to secure the front-row start at the Marina Bay street circuit left the Maranello squad deeply disappointed. The Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix qualifying session presented a golden opportunity for both drivers to deny Max Verstappen pole position after the reigning champion failed to improve on his final flying lap in Q3.

Just over a tenth of a second separated the top three drivers around the challenging street circuit. While Red Bull demonstrated clear progress allowing Verstappen to hustle his machine to the top spot—conquering the only regular circuit on the calendar where he had prior lacked a pole or win—their machinery was not outright the fastest during the crucial pole shootout.

"The car had potential for pole today, but we didn't have a smooth enough session in order to do the job," Leclerc said, reflecting on the missed opportunity after struggling with handling issues throughout Q1 and Q2. He conceded that Max Verstappen simply executed a better job when it mattered most under high pressure.

Braking issues heavily haunted Leclerc's performance, robbing him of essential confidence through the complex sequence of corners. He bled valuable time at the hairpin and was far too conservative on the brakes into the chicane sections. This lack of aggressive attack in the braking zones ultimately cost him crucial tenths in the final sector, neutralizing the inherent middle-sector superiority of the Ferrari package.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton looked exceptionally comfortable and electric through the opening two segments of qualifying, maximizing the front-end poise of his car in slow 90-degree corners. However, that blistering pace plateaued in Q3 as he failed to extract further gains on his final attempts. The missed execution from both Ferrari drivers handed a vital qualifying triumph to Red Bull on a silver platter.
