Formula 1's first and last sprint race at Zandvoort was hardly a classic, but it still produced some winners and losers.
The short race was criticized for lacking action, with only one meaningful overtake outside the start: Charles Leclerc's bold move on Lando Norris mid-race. The start itself was eventful as Kimi Antonelli jumped Oscar Piastri, while Franco Colapinto also passed Yuki Tsunoda.
Further back, the retiring Audi of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez's ailing Cadillac assisted some drivers in gaining positions. However, the overall race was dull, with The Race's Jack Benyon even comparing it unfavorably to a supercar parade.
Leclerc emerged as a winner thanks to a brave soft tyre strategy. Despite a poor start, he managed his tyres better than others, and his overtake on Norris was a highlight. Meanwhile, George Russell was flawless, taking pole and the sprint win, showing his mental sharpness after the summer break.
On the other hand, McLaren was the biggest loser. Norris and Piastri struggled with the medium tyres, and they will hope to improve for Sunday's main race. This result sets up an intriguing battle for the grand prix.
