F1 Dutch GP 2026: Sprint Debut & Zandvoort's Final Farewell

Formula 1 returns from its traditional European summer break this weekend, with all eyes on Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix. The 4.259km circuit may be short, but don't be fooled—its narrow layout, sweeping turns, and elevation changes offer a classic challenge amidst the North Sea coastal dunes.

With 14 turns famous for their banking, overtaking opportunities at Zandvoort are scarce. That's why qualifying and track position are everything. And this year, the challenge intensifies as F1 introduces the sprint format for the first time here. Teams get just one practice session before competitive action begins—strategic calls must be spot on.

This weekend also marks the 36th running of the Dutch GP as a world championship event, and the last for the foreseeable future. Zandvoort's contract expires at the end of 2026, so this could be an emotional farewell for the passionate Max Verstappen fans packing the grandstands.

Verstappen was the early master of this circuit after its return in 2021, winning the first three races. But the last two years belong to McLaren—Lando Norris in 2024 and Oscar Piastri last season. Interestingly, Piastri's Zandvoort victory 12 months ago remains his most recent in F1. The Australian hasn't won since, despite showing strong pace in Hungary before retiring with a mechanical issue.

Returning to the scene of his last win, Piastri has a golden chance to break that drought. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli leads the championship with a 50-point margin over Lewis Hamilton. George Russell sits a further nine points back in third. Antonelli has won six races this season, but Zandvoort wasn't kind to him last year—a collision with Charles Leclerc and two penalties left him 16th.

Russell also needs a rebound after a tough end to the first half, with a lap-one retirement in Belgium and P7 in Hungary leaving him 59 points behind Antonelli. On a personal note, he got engaged during the break—hopefully that brings him luck on track.
