Ferrari junior Rafael Camara was ultimately selected to secure a multi-year deal, replacing incumbent Esteban Ocon after successfully fending off fierce competition during an intense shootout test at Portimao utilizing a 2025-spec machine.
When asked whether the logic behind signing Camara went beyond purely raw speed during that particular test day, team principal Ayao Komatsu provided a remarkably straightforward answer by confirming that he simply proved to be the quickest driver on track.
The Portimao evaluation featured a highly competitive field, including McLaren's Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Ryo Hirakawa, who represents a key prospect from major team backer Toyota. That instrumental partnership has consistently provided valuable mileage opportunities since the project's inception.
Ayao Komatsu emphasized that having the capability to conduct internal driver assessments granted a level of absolute confidence that could never be achieved by merely observing junior series championships from the outside, ultimately neutralizing any potential gambles in the market.
