The Formula 1 paddock is bracing for a monumental loss as Beat Zehnder prepares to part ways with the Hinwil-based outfit at the end of December 2026. The major announcement confirmed by Audi signals the conclusion of an incredible chapter for the veteran sporting director who has dedicated nearly four decades of relentless work to motorsport.
Zehnder's remarkable journey initially began back in 1988 when he joined as a mechanic when Sauber was still competing in the World Sportscar Championship. When Peter Sauber made the bold decision to enter Formula 1 ahead of the 1993 season, Zehnder was immediately trusted to manage the team's entire logistical operation under immense pressure.
His role steadily evolved through the years from team manager to sporting director, cementing a status as the only active paddock member to attend well over 600 Grand Prix race weekends uninterrupted with a single organization. It stands as an unmatched world record in modern motorsport history.

Reflecting on the emotional debut at Kyalami back in March 1993, Zehnder recalled the sheer scale of the operation. "That was a very exciting time, especially because of the size of the team," he remembered of the days when they traveled with only 27 people including the drivers.
Despite running a tiny operation, drivers JJ Lehto and Karl Wendlinger stunned the grid with competitive pace right out of the box. Zehnder's eventual departure from the Audi era marks the true end of an irreplaceable era.
