Former Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has openly expressed his deep regret over seeing young prodigy Kimi Antonelli develop his career with rival team Mercedes instead of Maranello. Hailing from the same hometown of Bologna, Montezemolo admitted that it stings to witness such immense talent wearing silver rather than the iconic red of the Prancing Horse.
The missed opportunity dates back to when the driver was only eleven years old. According to Marco Antonelli speaking to Formula Passion, his son was granted access to test the simulator in Maranello, a facility specifically developed for the students of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Everything was seemingly set in motion to bring the young prospect into the Italian stable's nurturing system.
However, the course of history shifted due to administrative decisions at the time. Maurizio Arrivabene, who served as the team principal of the racing department back then, ultimately rejected the move by claiming that the child was still too young for the junior program. Just months later, Mercedes stepped in to secure the signature, sealing a partnership that would alter the landscape of modern motorsport.

Giovanni Minardi, son of team founder Giancarlo Minardi, corroborated that early discussions were held with both powerhouse teams to find the optimal junior development pathway. Meanwhile, former sporting director Massimo Rivola had also harbored strong intentions to sign the young prospect before the golden opportunity slipped away through the management's fingers.
Now at 79 years of age, Montezemolo remains fully convinced that the rising star will shape the future chapters of Formula 1 history. Beyond the racing achievements, he praised the strong family values instilled in the youngster, highlighting the ironic reality that the first true heir to racing legend Alberto Ascari was born mere minutes away from the iconic Italian factory.
