Esteban Ocon Issues Firm Formula 1 Career Declaration

As his tenure with the Haas squad draws to a close, French driver Esteban Ocon has made his future career plans crystal clear. The departure of the one-time Grand Prix winner from the Banbury-based outfit was confirmed ahead of a previous race weekend, putting an end to months of relentless speculation regarding his ongoing place within the Formula 1 paddock.

Esteban Ocon is widely expected to be replaced at Haas by Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Camara, a fellow Ferrari academy member who is lined up alongside likely teammate Ollie Bearman. This transition leaves the Frenchman in a challenging predicament, with the majority of rival outfits having already secured their respective driver line-ups for the coming years, leaving his immediate future in the sport shrouded in uncertainty.

Recent rumours had previously pointed toward the possibility of Esteban Ocon spending a season competing in an alternative racing discipline, utilizing the experience to potentially limber up for a future bid to return to the Formula 1 grid. However, when speaking ahead of a Grand Prix weekend and directly asked if he would consider racing outside of Formula 1, his response reflected a singular focus.

"Formula 1," he stated. "That’s where I deserve to be. If I look at the results and what I’ve shown in Formula 1, I deserve to be in Formula 1. So of course, there are other categories which are fantastic as well, but I want to be racing in Formula 1 in the next five, seven years. That’s where I want to be. So I will keep pushing to be in that position. So yeah, in the near future, that’s the only thing I’m looking at so far."

When further pressed on whether he would pursue opportunities in any other racing series should a Formula 1 seat fail to materialize, Esteban Ocon offered a short and direct reply. His recent upturn in form—highlighted by a deserved points finish in Baku and a competitive stint in Malaysia before fading due to a lack of pace following a tyre stop—may have arrived at an opportune moment to keep potential avenues open.
