Being the championship leader brings prestige, but it also carries a heavy burden as Elfyn Evans discovered during a punishing opening leg at Rally Italia Sardegna. Sweeping loose gravel on Friday immediately dropped the Welshman down to sixth overall, neutralizing his pace.
Things failed to improve on Saturday, leaving the Toyota contender stranded in the pack while teammate Oliver Solberg surged into the rally lead. If positions remain static, Evans' championship advantage at the top of the standings will be slashed to a precarious four points.
"We are trying to drive well, but you can see that the road is still improving enormously for the guys starting behind us," Evans reflected, highlighting the inherent disadvantage of running first on loose gravel.

Trapped by time gaps that are too vast to bridge safely, Evans admitted that pushing beyond the limit carries far more risk than playing a conservative game. He confessed to feeling somewhat powerless against the stopwatch under the current running order.
With five career runner-up finishes already to his name, the desire to finally capture the ultimate WRC crown is palpable. However, the unique characteristics of the Mediterranean gravel stages mean overtaking is nearly impossible without rivals hitting trouble.
Evans acknowledged Solberg's stellar pace but emphasized that survival is the immediate priority. All eyes now turn to Super Sunday, where a flat-out attacking strategy will be mandatory to salvage his championship aspirations.
