History has officially been made in the World Rally Championship as Elfyn Evans clinched his maiden world title. To honor this historic milestone, the quiet Welsh town of Dolgellau prepared a special homecoming celebration on Thursday afternoon to welcome the championship-winning driver.
The Toyota star secured rallying's ultimate prize after leading the standings consistently since April and sealing the deal during the dramatic season finale in Sardinia earlier this month. This phenomenal achievement marks the first time in history that a Welsh driver has ever captured the WRC drivers' championship crown.
Characteristically modest and unassuming, the factory driver initially needed some gentle persuasion before fully embracing the mid-Wales celebration. "When it was first talked about, I wasn’t sure. You know: is it really me? But at the same time, it was really nice that people wanted to do something and they wanted to mark this moment," Evans told DirtFish.
Despite his initial hesitation, Evans admitted he felt deeply honored that the Dolgellau Town Council and Gwynedd Council came together to organize the special event. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate with the local community and fans who have supported him throughout his long motorsport journey.
Adding to the excitement of the Thursday gathering, Evans drove his championship-winning GR Yaris Rally1 machine straight into Dolgellau's Eldon Square. The title-winning rally car remained on public display while the newly crowned world champion was interviewed on stage about his unforgettable season.
