Stefano Domenicali, former Ferrari team principal and current Formula 1 CEO, has spoken out about the pressure mounting on Frederic Vasseur. In an interview with Rai Radio 1, he warned Ferrari against making hasty decisions amid swirling speculation.
Five races without a podium around the summer break have reignited rumors about Vasseur's future in Maranello. But Domenicali, who led the Italian team from 2008 to 2014, stressed the importance of calm. “It's a moment when results aren't what's expected. My experience tells me that precisely when there are many rumors and even self-nominations from important people, we must stay strong, united, and avoid fantasy solutions that risk leading us astray and accumulating further delay,” he said.
Domenicali understands the pressure Vasseur is under. He emphasized that a Ferrari team principal must stay focused on long-term goals. “Whoever is responsible for a team like Ferrari, Fred Vasseur, must feel the desire to keep the ship steady and be clear about what needs to be done for a path to victories. The bigger the storm, the more the captain must keep the helm straight,” he added.
The statement comes amid wild speculation. Several big names are reportedly ready to take over the hot seat at Ferrari if management decides to part ways with Vasseur. However, Domenicali urged against rash moves, recalling Ferrari's long history of faltering due to emotional decisions.
Since joining in early 2023, Vasseur has worked to build a more solid team foundation. Although he hasn't delivered a title yet, he has brought Ferrari back to competitiveness in several races. His biggest challenge is maintaining consistency amid the dominance of other teams and ever-changing technical regulations.
Pressure on Vasseur is nothing new. Ferrari is always under the spotlight, and every poor result immediately raises questions about leadership. However, support from figures like Domenicali can serve as a temporary shield. Ultimately, the decision lies with president John Elkann and the board of directors.
