Nicolo Bulega couldn't seal the 2026 WorldSBK title on Saturday at Cremona. However, the Ducati rider remains on the brink of clinching the crown on home soil before his move to MotoGP next season.
Iker Lecuona delayed Bulega's celebration with a dramatic win in Race 1. His Aruba.it Racing Ducati teammate cut five points from Bulega's lead. Now, Bulega leads the standings with 573 points, 141 points ahead of Lecuona who has 432 points.
With only two rounds remaining after Cremona, Estoril and Jerez, a total of 124 points are still up for grabs. This means Bulega must leave Cremona with a lead of at least 124 points to secure the title. He also holds a tiebreaker advantage with 26 race wins, which could be decisive if points are equal.
There are several scenarios that could see Bulega crowned champion on Sunday. First, if he can extend his lead to 149 points or more after the Superpole Race. In the 10-lap sprint race, Bulega must finish ahead of Lecuona by eight points or more. For example, if Bulega wins (12 points), Lecuona must finish sixth or lower (maximum 4 points). If Bulega finishes second (9 points), Lecuona must not finish better than ninth (1 point or zero). However, if Bulega finishes third or worse, the title fight will continue to Race 2 as the maximum gap he could gain is only seven points.
If the title isn't decided in the Superpole Race, Bulega still has a strong chance in Race 2. He simply needs to ensure his lead isn't cut by more than 17 points by Lecuona across Sunday. In other words, Bulega controls his own destiny. If he can score a total of 20 points from the two races on Sunday, the championship is automatically his, regardless of Lecuona's results.
Several finishing combinations also favor Bulega. A second-place finish in Race 2 (20 points) is enough to seal the title, regardless of the Superpole Race outcome. Consistent podiums, such as third in the Superpole Race (7 points) and third in Race 2 (16 points) totaling 23 points, are more than enough to claim the crown.
Even if Lecuona sweeps both races on Sunday, Bulega can still win the title as long as he scores 20 points from the two races. This scenario shows just how dominant Bulega's position is.
With the added pressure of racing at home, Bulega seems to be waiting for the right moment to celebrate his first WorldSBK title. But as Lecuona showed on Saturday, races can still produce surprises. One thing is clear: fans at Cremona will witness a historic moment for the Italian rider.
