William Brown finally broke his victory drought in spectacular fashion at Queensland Raceway on Sunday. The Triple Eight driver put on a masterclass in a chaotic 39-lap race, punctuated by back-to-back Safety Car periods in the closing laps, to secure his first win of the season.
Starting from third, Brown showed incredible patience. He let his rivals battle ahead, then pounced when the moment was right. Grove Racing, which had looked strong through Kai Allen and Matt Payne, had to settle for fourth and sixth respectively. Meanwhile, Dick Johnson Racing's Brodie Kostecki finished second, and Brown's teammate Broc Feeney completed the podium in third.
The victory was especially sweet as it came at the same circuit where he last won a year ago. "Give us the same equipment and see what happens," Brown said, with a hint of defiance. "What a mega race. It was elbows-out, and that's what racing is all about."
Brown also thanked his Red Bull Ampol Racing team for their hard work in getting him back to winning ways after a difficult period. "It's been a super tough year with the problems we had, but to be competitive on the first weekend back... a lot of people said we'd be stuck mid-pack, and here we are, number one," he added.
The race also highlighted the intense competition in Supercars, with Toyota's Chaz Mostert finishing an impressive fifth. With this result, Brown is sure to be a focal point for the remainder of the season.
