A weekend that should have been a celebration of motorsport in Italy turned into deep mourning. Four people lost their lives in three separate incidents at rally and hill climb events, leaving big questions about spectator and crew safety in racing.
The first incident occurred on Saturday at the Rally 1000 Miglia. A 63-year-old male spectator was killed when a Skoda driven by an Italian crew left the road at a hairpin. The car failed to negotiate the corner and hit the spectator area, causing the victim to die at the scene. More tragic news came on Sunday from the Rally Val d'Aveto, north of Genoa. Stefano Sappracone, a 43-year-old co-driver, was killed in an accident on the fourth special stage. According to news agency ANSA, the Skoda Fabia Rally2 driven by Stefano Scapellato left the road at a corner and struck a tree. Sappracone died instantly, while Scapellato suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further checks. This incident is a heavy blow to the Italian rally community, which has lost one of its experienced crews.
The third incident occurred in Sicily at the Monte Erice Hill Climb. Two young men, aged 18 and 20, were killed when a car competing in the event left the road and hit spectators. An official was also injured and taken to hospital. The exact cause of the accident is not yet clear, but initial suspicions point to speed and lack of protective barriers in that area.
Local authorities are now conducting thorough investigations into all three accidents. They will examine technical aspects, safety procedures, and compliance with racing regulations. These incidents highlight again the critical importance of strict safety standards at all levels of motorsport, for drivers, crews, and spectators attending events.
Condolences have been expressed by various parties, including the Italian motorsport federation (ACI Sport), which offered its sympathies and promised a comprehensive review.
