Marco Bezzecchi stunned the MotoGP paddock by setting the fastest lap in Practice for the Aragon Grand Prix. Despite still nursing an injury from Sachsenring, the Aprilia rider clocked 1m45.455s with just two minutes remaining.
The time broke the absolute lap record at MotorLand Aragon, displacing Marc Marquez, who had been the pre-weekend favourite. Marquez led for much of the session, but Bezzecchi's late charge proved decisive.
Alex Marquez also impressed, moving up to second with a gap of just 0.010s, splitting the two factory riders. The top three finished within 0.038s of each other, setting the stage for a thrilling qualifying.
The session was fast from the start, with Pedro Acosta breaking into the 1m46s bracket early. Marc Marquez soon responded with a 1m46.320s, half a second clear of the field.
In the final 15 minutes, Fermin Aldeguer briefly took over with a 1m45.909s. Marquez then reclaimed the top with a new track record of 1m45.493s, but Bezzecchi had the final say.
Fabio di Giannantonio finished fourth as the best of the rest, followed by Aldeguer and Raul Fernandez. Johann Zarco made a remarkable return from injury, taking tenth.
