Marco Bezzecchi pulled off an upset in MotoGP qualifying at Aragon, snatching pole position from pre-weekend favourite Marc Marquez. The Aprilia rider was the only one to dip below 1m45s, setting a 1m44.962s lap.
Marquez threatened in the final seconds but a mistake at Turn 14 left him 0.089s adrift in second. Alex Marquez will join them on the front row for the sprint and Sunday's main race.
Behind them, Raul Fernandez, championship leader Jorge Martin, and Pedro Acosta form row two. Acosta used Marquez's tow for his best lap before crashing at Reverse Corkscrew while trying to improve.
Qualifying also had drama in Q1. Pecco Bagnaia and Diogo Moreira advanced to Q2 despite Moreira crashing late. Meanwhile, Jack Miller, announced to leave Pramac Yamaha this week, was the top Yamaha in 13th, ahead of Brad Binder, his future World Superbike rival.
Joan Mir missed a Q2 spot by 0.2s to Moreira, settling for 15th, but again outqualified teammate Luca Marini for the 12th time in 13 attempts this season.
