Marco Bezzecchi set the pace in first practice for MotoGP's Indonesian Grand Prix, but a late lap from Marc Marquez denied Aprilia an early one-two at Mandalika. All expectations are of the Aprilia being a formidable package this weekend and the evidence from the opening 45-minute session supported that.
Raul Fernandez led the way in the opening stages on his satellite Trackhouse bike, trading fastest times with VR46 Ducati rider Fabio DiGiannantonio. But it was Bezzecchi - imperious at Mandalika last year, albeit without the grand prix win to show for it after his crash with Marquez - who was the benchmark by some margin.
Bezzecchi set his best time, a 1m30.132s, 25 minutes into the session and even Marquez's late effort aboard the factory Ducati only got him within a quarter of a second of the fastest time. Jorge Martin, two points ahead of Marquez at the head of the riders' championship, was third as he improved on his final effort.

Pedro Acosta was the fastest of the KTMs ahead of Fernandez, whose Trackhouse team-mate Ai Ogura had the session's most notable moment as he fell at high speed through the Turn 8 left-hander at the back end of the circuit.
Ogura ended up in 21st behind LCR Honda's Diogo Moreira, another rider to fall during the session at Turn 1 where Fermin Aldeguer also came off, and ahead of only Honda injury stand-in Aleix Espargaro, who was 2.777s off top spot.
