MotoGP title contender Marco Bezzecchi showed his teeth at the Aragon circuit by topping the second free practice session (Practice 2) on Friday. The Aprilia rider outpaced four Ducatis behind him, while Johann Zarco immediately grabbed the spotlight on his first day back from injury.
Zarco, who had been sidelined since the Barcelona round in May, managed to break into the top 10 and secure a Q2 spot in the dying moments of the hour-long practice. That result also knocked out his LCR teammate Diogo Moreira, who will have to go through Q1. Zarco was the only Honda representative in a top 10 dominated by Ducati and Aprilia.
A fierce battle unfolded at the end of the session as riders scrambled for the best lap times. Bezzecchi emerged as the fastest with a 1m45.455s lap, beating Alex Marquez by just 0.010s and Marc Marquez by 0.038s. Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) and Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini Ducati) completed the top five, ahead of the Aprilias of Raul Fernandez and Jorge Martin.
Pedro Acosta was again the top KTM, though nine tenths off the pace, while Franco Morbidelli used his teammate as a reference to also grab a top-10 spot. But one big name faltered: Pecco Bagnaia was the only Ducati rider outside the top 10, as his late bid for a Q2-worthy lap came up short after a mistake at Turn 16.
With this result, the competition in Aragon is set to heat up. Bezzecchi's impressive pace, Zarco's immediate form, and Bagnaia's failure are compelling storylines heading into qualifying and the race this weekend.
